piano self-published piano choral vocal Composer

In the early 1990s, Mary began arranging pieces for her piano students after becoming increasingly frustrated with the quality of arrangements available to them. Everything seemed either too easy (and unrecognizable) or was not user-friendly or worth the practice time required to master it.

She worked to incorporate the full use of the keyboard by exploring thicker textures and more interesting harmonies. As a result, her students found their work on a piece more fulfilling and they were motivated to play even more!

As an experiment, she set out to write some original pieces for her hobby adult students that would incorporate beautiful melodies with simple flowing accompaniments - ones they could master with ease, without technical complications. Knowing the sounds that motivated them and their limitations as 'hobby pianists', she began writing music that allowed them to play with artistry from the very beginning. As a result, their practicing improved. She noticed they were much more motivated to 'polish' their pieces when they truly loved the sound of the piece.

Composing for her own students continues to be the major motivation for her writing projects today.
