Although Mary Sallee is better known for her piano writing, her true forte for composition lies in her works for choir and piano. As a singer and accompanist for most of her life, she is well acquainted with various choral ensembles, from the small church choir to the large civic choir. Having performed as a singer and accompanist in a wide variety of groups, she is familiar with both the possibilities and limitations of groups depending on size, voicing, experience and talent. Mary began writing for the church choir at McFarlin Methodist Church in Norman, OK, where she has been a member since 1990. She was quick to have one of her early works accepted for publication by Alliance Music in 1995. Later that year, she was commissioned by Dennis Shrock and the Canterbury Choral Society of Oklahoma City to have a Christmas work written for the large metropolitan choir to perform on their annual holiday concert at the Civic Center in downtown Oklahoma City. She chose a medley of bell carols (Ding-Dong Merrily on High, Ring Bells Go Ting-a-ling, Carol of the Bells, Jingle Bells and I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day arranged for SSAATTBB, one piano (4 hands) and percussion. Her other writing reflects an interest in women's and children's choirs. In 2000, she joined with one of her adult students and children's author, Lynn Wendelbo to collaborate on an original sacred and secular work to enter in Kidsfest, an international composition competition for children's choirs, sponsored by the Montessori Association in Omaha, NE. Both of her works were chosen in the top ten of both categories, with her secular piece, Pockets finishing in 2nd place - overall. Some choral ensembles that have performed her works include: University of Oklahoma Choirs, the Oral Roberts University Chorale, the Texas Christian University Chorale, the Canterbury Children's Chorus and Canterbury Choral Society, McFarlin Methodist Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City, the Mustang All-City 5th grade Choir, The Norman's Children's Chorus, the Women's Chorale of Southwestern Oklahoma College, Old Bethel Church Choir of Indianapolis and the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Tulsa. www.waltonmusic.com |
